The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (USA), better known by its acronym in English DARPA, is developing an Artificial Intelligence (AI) that will be in charge of deciding who is assisted and who is not in emergency situations. This technology aims to avoid human prejudice and use algorithms instead to avoid bad decisions with triage, which is responsible for evaluating in what order patients are treated depending on their severity.

In cases where the healthcare system collapses, as happened during the first wave of COVID-19 or during wars or natural disasters, healthcare providers are overwhelmed by the difficult decision of whom to treat first. For that reason, the United States is creating an AI to solve this debate as part of its "In the moment" program.

Matt Turek, the director of DARPA programs, has explained that the AI ​​algorithm of In the moment will take into account decisions previously made by triage experts. The difference between the machine and a toilet will be that the technology will not be affected by the stress that certain decisions can cause to a human.

In addition, Turek details that the AI ​​could be able to quickly access data that could be decisive, such as the availability of medicines, the blood supply or the number of medical personnel in a nearby hospital. “Computer algorithms can find solutions that humans cannot,” considers the director.

Initially, DARPA estimates that it will take about three and a half years to develop its technology. Despite not having said the name of any company or having commented on the money they will invest, they have clarified that for the creation of the AI ​​they will have the help of external companies
